Manifesto: The Load-Bearing Life
We are told that strength is about resistance. That a good structure pushes back against the wind, the weight, the heat. But in thirty years of calculating load-bearing walls and in twenty years of tending my organic garden, I have learned a different truth: Strength is about absorption.
Clay, when packed under a greenhouse roof, does not fight the noon sun. It drinks it. It holds the heat in its molecular lattice, delaying the temperature spike by ten minutes. Those ten minutes are the difference between a thriving tomato crop and a wilted failure. The best engineering is invisible. The best community work is the same.
